The $17.9-million Black Mountain Bridge in Phoenix is one of the first federally funded, construction manager at-risk highway design projects in Arizona. A joint effort between the Arizona Dept. of Transportation and the city of Phoenix, the project incorporated a roundabout as a transition to slow traffic to and from state Route 51, and to let drivers exiting a nearby school perform U-turns. Community outreach combined traditional print notices, face-to-face meetings and social media to engage and keep the public informed. The project includes a pedestrian bridge for access to a 1,500-acre recreation area popular with hikers and bicyclists. The project also sets the stage for a future alignment of Black Mountain Boulevard north to Cave Creek Road.
