The $23.6-million Lakeville Interchange project widened the southbound overcrossing for Highway 101 and Route 116, replaced the northbound overcrossing and reconstructed ramps, retaining walls and soundwalls. Highway 101 was also widened and improved.

Because crews had to work around an adjacent road project, the contractor restaged activities to avoid disruption to either project. Detours, staging, median grades, structural modifications and tie-in had to be meticulously coordinated. A bridge used as habitat by protected migratory birds had to be demolished prior to nesting season. Paving was scheduled to occur during the warmer hours of the night, requiring adjustments to lane closures.

The team worked with a supplier to develop a special concrete mix for the decks to minimize cracking, which is expected to save an estimated $2 million in maintenance during the next 20 years.
