This privately financed 390-ft-long pedestrian skybridge straddles the border of the U.S. and Mexico. The first of its kind in the world, the bridge provides an easier border crossing for millions of travelers using Mexico’s Tijuana International Airport.

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the building occupant, says the project team “has not only engineered a physical bridge. They have designed a connection across cultures.”

The project required intense international collaboration. Design staff and construction crews in the U.S. and Mexico worked with their cross-border counterparts. Efforts included hoisting large sections of the bridge structure into place over a six-lane federal highway in Mexico and working around the international border fence.

One Global Best Projects judge said, “Against a complex political and commercial structure, the vision to embark on a project such as this and turn it into reality is first-rate.”
