Transurban Group will begin work on a 2.5-mile southern extension of the I-95 Express Lanes in northern Virginia. The $31-million project will eliminate frequent bottlenecks at the reversible Express Lanes’ existing southern terminus at Garrisonville. A new southbound exit ramp beyond Garrisonville Road is set to be complete in late 2017, with a new northbound ramp opening the following summer. VDOT hopes to extend the Express Lanes at least another 10 miles to Fredericksburg, now the hub for Washington, D.C.’s southernmost suburbs.
