California BNSF Railway is planning to build the Southern California International Gateway, a 153-acre cargo depot just off Interstate 710 in Los Angeles bordering Long Beach. The project entails constructing rail tracks to connect to existing rail lines, including the Alameda Corridor, widening the Dominguez Channel rail bridge and reconstructing the Sepulveda Blvd. rail bridge and the Pacific Coast Highway overpass. It also includes building an intermodal railyard consisting of loading and storage tracks for trains, container loading and storage areas, a locomotive service area and a truck gate complex. The Gateway will enable BNSF to take cargo to and from the port by rail rather than truck, reducing congestion on I-710 (the Long Beach Freeway). The project is valued at $500 million.
