Australia The Barangaroo Development Authority is seeking contractors to develop blocks of central Barangaroo, a section of Sydney. The developers will be expected to combine civic and cultural attractions with recreational, retail and commercial uses on a 13-acre site, located between Headland Park to the north and Barangaroo South. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Andersen Hunter Horne are creating the master plan for Central Barangaroo. The project has been valued at between $100 million and $250 million. Barbados American World Clinics Ltd. is planning to build a 50-bed surgical hospital and dental clinic, located at the old St. Joseph's Hospital site in the Ashton Hall area of St. Peter parish. Brazil Manabi S.A. is planning to develop the Morro Do Pilar iron-ore mine in Minas Gerais state. The mine is expected to produce 25 million tons of iron ore per year; it is scheduled to complete in December 2016. Chile Empresa Nacional de Electricidad SA (Endesa) is planning to build the 150-MW Los Condores hydroelectric plant. The project entails the construction of a 12-kilometer-long intake tunnel, a 40-meter-high machinery hall and a shielded penstock with a 470-meter head. Kosovo The Kosovo Ministry of Infrastructure has selected Bechtel Group Inc. and its joint-venture partner, Enka, to build Route 6, a 37-mile-long motorway linking the capital, Pristina, to neighboring Macedonia. Mexico The Secretariat of Transport and Communications is planning to expand Mexico City International Airport. The first phase calls for the construction of three additional runways and one new terminal, located to the west of the current airport in the Texcoco area. Designed by a partnership of Foster + Partners and Fernando Romero Enterprise, the terminal is tentatively expected to total 170,000 sq m. Arup developed the expansion's master plan. Puerto Rico The U.S. General Services Administration is planning to build a Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in San Juan. The project entails constructing two five-story buildings, totaling 240,000 sq ft. The complex will include a 14,500-sq-ft child-care center, a 358-space indoor parking lot and a 399-space surface parking lot. Gruzen Samton Architects designed the master plan and the parking garage. Thomas Phifer and Partners designed the main office building. Hill International is the construction manager. Thailand Grand Canal Land Public Co. Ltd. is planning to build the Super Tower, an office and hotel in Bangkok. Totaling 3.4 million sq ft, the 125-story building will include a luxury hotel, an observation deck, offices, parking spaces, and a 65,000-sq-ft convention and exhibition center. United Arab Emirates Nakheel Properties has awarded a $40-million contract to Overseas AST Co. Ltd. to build a boardwalk at the Palm Juneirah, the large artificial-island property in Dubai. The 6-m-wide, 6.4-km-long boardwalk will run past the Atlantis and Rixos resorts. At either end of the crescent, two piers will extend 100 m out to sea; each pier will include cafes and restaurants. United Kingdom Horizon Nuclear Power is planning to build the Wylfa Newydd nuclear powerplant, located on a 629-acre site on the Isle of Anglesey in Wales. The plant is expected to generate a minimum of 2,700 MW. The project will include a marine off-loading facility, a cooling-water intake and outfall structure, associated buildings, electricity transmission infrastructure, and interim waste and spent-fuel storage facilities. Sitework is expected to start in 2015, with construction beginning in 2018 and finishing in 2019. The project is valued at $9 billion.
