When Ryan Nataluk joined Stantec in 2007, he was the firm’s only bridge inspector west of the Mississippi and one of only 20 to 30 professional engineers in the U.S. who used technical climbing skills to inspect bridges.

Stantec challenged him to build a regional bridge-inspection practice across the West. Nataluk now manages a team of six that has done more than 10,000 inspections in 16 states and three Canadian provinces.

More importantly, Whitaker anticipated the current recession, and Putnam headed the preparation of a lean operating plan that has not required major employee layoffs.

“Within five years, managing IT infrastructure will be outsourced,” he says.
