Award of Merit: Government/Public Buildings

Built as part of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) project, this $64-million contract included simultaneous construction of five laboratory office buildings at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a research facility in Upton, N.Y. This latest addition provides roughly 124,000 sq ft of lab and office space, including wet labs, dry labs, fabrication/assembly shops and tech spaces. Each building can accommodate up to 124 occupants.

One building needed to be built to resist the slightest vibration. The contractor, designer and engineering team devised a plan to isolate the building by using a special concrete slab underlayment to mitigate vibration.

The project team—which logged more than 10,000 hours of safety training during the course of construction—worked more than 300,000 hours without a lost-time incident.
