Award of Merit-Higher Education
This 15,000-student school had outgrown its facilities so it added a glassy new aluminum-and-steel complex on its midtown Manhattan block. Doubling the school's space by adding 625,000 sq ft, the complex consists of a 14-story tower rising from a wider five-story podium.
The project, which took six years to complete, faced several major challenges. These included Amtrak lines that cut a diagonal swath through a tunnel at the site's southwestern corner.
The project team had to work around train schedules and also was forced to use a cantilever for nine stories of the building to keep their weight from pressing down on the ground and crushing the train tunnel's roof.
