Daimler Trucks North America is starting construction on a 265,000-sq-ft headquarters located in the Swan Island area of Portland. The project is valued at $150 million and includes a parking garage and a greenway built on the property for public access to the water. Portland-based Hoffman Construction Co. of Oregon is the general contractor on the project. Completion is scheduled for January 2016. Washington

City of Sammamish Parks and Recreation Dept. is beginning construction of a two-story, 69,000-sq-ft community and aquatic center, which will be located adjacent to the King County Public Library. The center will accommodate a full-size and a family-size gymnasium, a cardio and group fitness area, a jogging track and a child watch area. The aquatic component will consist of a leisure pool and a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool with locker rooms. The project, which is valued at between $23 million and $25 million, will include several multipurpose rooms to serve a variety of recreational uses as well as a parking garage and surface parking area. Washington

King County Procurement/Contract Services Section plans to upgrade the Factoria Recycling and Transfer Station with a new recycling collection area for items such as yard waste, clean wood, appliances and scrap metal. The project is valued at $76 million and will include a hazardous waste collections site; an enclosed solid waste transfer building; and a garbage compactor aimed at improving the efficiency of payloads and decreasing the number of transfer trailer truck trips required to and from the station. It will also include construction of a larger transfer building to reduce customer wait times. The project is scheduled to begin this July. Alaska

Alaska Dept. of Transportation plans to construct runway safety area extensions at Kodiak Airport. The federally funded project is valued at $58 million and includes airfield lighting, signage, paving, striping, relocation of Federal Aviation Administration visual navaids and access roadways as necessary. The project will also repair Devils Creek Culvert, which flows under runway 7/25, and build a dike at the culvert's inlet.
